nason's classes' final submission
okay, it's about that time, but let me give you all a bit of an update as to what i am currently thinking. you all have given it some good effort and done some quality work so here's a bit of a change. if you get the wb posting done, congrats you'll get some significant extra credit. if you do not get everything posted, you are going to be okay. i won't punish you for not having figured that out. many of you have been slaving over this for a few days with some difficulties and i hope you figured it out, if not let me know of any questions you may have and i'll see what i can do to help you out.
for the most part the grades are looking pretty good, so you should relax in that area. just get done what you can, get some sleep. forget about arch2354 unless you hear otherwise from me and relax. it's summer break now, have the fun that you deserve, but please, please be safe.
you all have a great amount of talent and knowledge to offer this college and this field, be confident, work hard and take challenges head on. don't make excuses, just beautiful, insightful projects and stand behind your work. have a great vacation and be ready for an awesome school year this coming fall. good luck with all that you do!
sincerely,
josh.

NASON'S CLASSES READ READ READ READ READ
this is kinda long, so don't give up or you'll miss out. and read the details again if you have any doubts as to what, when and where things are due!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! call or email me for any help you may need, but only after you know this email in-and-out and still need help.
here are some tips for possible animations:
.01_walk through. the easiest way to do this is in the 'top' view place a camera. 'click the set frame' button as we did when i showed you the object evolution-type animation. then click 'key frame' as we did in the same example and move the camera and time line accordingly. this will move the camera in sync with your animation time line. when done switch your view to the appropriate camera and click play. watch the simple beauty unfold.
if your camera needs to change levels when you are moving it in top view have a side view visible in another window [alt-w] and you can adjust it there. the camera will initially be placed on the ground plane level. move it up about 5 - 5.5' unless this is an ant's walk through. i don't want to know how your toes would experience the building while you run through it in flip-flops. the 5'-5.5' is to put the camera at about eye level.
another thing to consider is the timing. the filming occurs at 30 frames per second. if you are leaving your frames at 100, that is 3.33 seconds long. that's to short, and the animation will be flying through the space. "dat's no goot!" instead click on the time clock icon down by the animation time line and out in more frames. this will drastically elongate your rendering, but make it a much better and longer video. you can also slow the speed down to 1/4speed here. that alone changes the length from 3.33 seconds, to 13.33 seconds. shoot for at least 30- 45 second animations [at normal speed that is 900 - 1350 frames and at 1/4 speed that is 225 to 338 frames].
.02_fly around. basically the same steps, just instead of moving the camera through the space you move it around the building's perimeter. the camera level and timing hints apply to all rendered animations from viz or max [and generally speaking formz, too]. remember you can also produce any animation in wire frame [by clicking 'force wire frame' in the render parameters box].
.03_parametric camera. this is the one where we exported an adjustable camera view to quicktime player from max. this allows the viewer to look around your space from a specific stand point. we did this one as an interior, another option is to do one of the exterior as well. we went over the steps in class, so i won't repeat them here.
.04_camera path. this one you can play with, but i would recommend the others first. you can draw a spline [circle, oval, etc.] in the top view, then create a camera and look for the option to 'set camera to path'. with some tweaking these can be pretty nice, but the the speed is harder to get right.
.05_inclusion animation. this is the gem, especially for those of you with small gallery spaces. this is where you show how your alien vs. predator comes to being. what you would do is a lot like options .01 and .02. here, you place a camera that would show well a specific point where your gallery and collage come together. start with just the gallery and one by one move a piece of your 'alien' into vie while sliding the animation time line over. this will record how each piece comes into the gallery as if it is being constructed there on the spot. it is also possible to do this by turning your collage off and turning it on one piece at a time until it all shows up. if your collage imported as one big piece you may have to be a bit more creative, but by sliding things, moving planes [such as the ground plane], etc. so you can show this process.
there are many other ways you can do creative animations of your own device. feel free to experiment a little bit. these should then be linked to your website under the 'final composition' heading. i don't think these will actually fit into the gallery [i may be wrong here], but either way, they can be linked below.
as far as animations go, i want to see at least two. three or more is extra credit, which some of you could use to your advantage. for example, you do 12 animations, you get credit for 10 extra credit assignments, which would put pretty much anyone in the 'a' category. however, for them to really count, the need to be useful renderings. i'm going to ignore animations that do not really show your work.
speaking of grades, here's how i am calculating them...
2d phase: 30%
3d phase: 30%
final submission: 25%
class participation: 15%
this is your 100% grade.
here is where I add points for extra credit and subtract for absences [in excess of 3]. if you have more than 3, you will need some extra credit help to counter weigh those. absences also affect your class participation grade, so you coming to class will really pay off 100-fold.
remember the absolute last time you can turn anything in is this sunday night at 11:59 pm [meaning website and server]. by that time you must have all images and videos posted to your web page and in your network folder you should have a folder that is entitled "000_final submission" in that folder there should be four sub-folders, all named identically to the four section headings on your web page. in these sub-folders there should be a copy of all images and videos on your website and any files[form_z, max, illustrator, etc] that contain the images and/or videos in that section. ANYTHING TURNED IN BY THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE OF FRIDAY NIGHT BY 11:59 PM, WILL BE BLESSED NUMERICALLY AS TURNED IN 'EARLY'. saturday and sunday submissions will be considered on-time. monday will be too late.
my earlier email about web-posting is included below as a refresher!
good luck and good work! if you have any questions, please let me know and i will do my best to help.
please have a great and SAFE summer. if you can only have one of the two, choose safe over great.

dearest class.
i apologize for the delay in sending this. i have been slammed with my own stuff, not thtat that is an excuse. for the sinal submission you now have until sunday night 11:59 pm at the latest. nothing will be accepted later than this due to the fact that i submit your grades monday morning.the class website where you post your final stuff is located at:
http://www.arch.ttu.edu/courses/2007/spring/2354/nason's_babies.htm
go here, click on your name select to edit with microsoft frontapage [for new internet explorer versions it is under the 'page' tab at the top right.] and just drop your images into the appropriate gallery by double clicking. you then select each image and enter a short descriptive caption that will appear below each image. your animations can be posted below the images in the 'final composition' gallery.once you click on edit with frontpage you will have to sign in to edit.
below is your user name, password example.
ttu\eraidereraider password
if you cannot log in send me an email with your eraider username and i'll fix it, i had to guess on them.this is very simple, you just need to categorize every thing you have into these categories: 2d, 3d, final and extra. only use image files [jpegs work best] and put them in order so the gallery makes sense.let me know if you have any problems. also, you do not need to be on the network to do this, any internet connection will work.have an enjoyable and safe summer break!josh

friday's submittal for nason's classes!!
friday the 4th at 11:59pm your finished 3d models are due. no animations or line drawings are due until you post your website next friday. for this in your network folder you should add a file entitled "final 3d model" in that put the actual file of your finished model and at least 5 [FIVE] renderings of it. these renderings do not have to be of finished quality, but it should be apparant that you have begun to work on lighting and rendering. they can be small though. they are just proof of what you have done and how you did it.
i am currently working on getting the website up and running and will send another message when it is ready for you to post.
good luck on your finals and please have a safe summer!

idea exploration imagination
create or invent an idea - this idea is to be EXPLORED : EXLPOITED : ENHANCED and have lots of energy (seriously) this idea will be taken into photoshop, CAD or Illustrator, then into 3dsMAx or Viz.
with your idea we will continue to experiment with edit mesh, modifiers of your selection, editable splines, renderable splines, sweeps, soft selections, and anything else you can create or come up with. the INTENT is to create and imagine architectural space so that you can explore the depths of this software.
come to class with your original sketch, collage, and idea - well formulated and well documented (scanned in and traced ready for max)
we will cover advanced lighting and default scan line render
we will cover mental ray render, global illumination, ambient occlusion
we will cover simple auto-key animation
next week is the last week of class come to class ready to learn and take notes we will go over a lot of information again :

Nason's Classes for Wed. April 4th!
p_01. building tutorial must be 100% complete and done well. do something different to show
you did it and learned from it. five jpegs of the building in process and one at least 2 of
the final product must be in your class-network folder before the start of class on
wednesday.
p_02. build a rev-it model of your entire gallery. do it well and do it as detailed as possible. put
at least 3 jpegs of your final product in your class-network folder before the start of
wednesday's class. mediocrity is not an option here. if you are caught up on the tutorial,
this will not be a bad work load. if you failed to complete the week-long assignment that
was due today, you are in for some long nights, and you will get no sympathy from me. if
your gallery is the underwood center, do not model the entire thing. you can either model
a section of it comparable to the other galleries, join with other underwoodians and share
sections to compile a complete model or you can pick one of the smaller galleries and
model it out in explicit detail.
check your email for more details. i sent out a mass email to both sections describing the assignment in a little more detail. good luck and do a good job. i need to see some proof of effort on these. i am rather disappointed by the majority of the buildings and modelings i have seen as of late.

REVIT TUTORIALS UPDATE
upon further inspection of the tutorials there is quite a bit of tutorials! and there are some that do not relate to our modeling skills - i have whittled the selection of tutorials down to the following
getting started (intro explains the program and GUI) >> understanding the basics
developing your ideas (this one pretty much sums up the modeling) >> creating a building information model
viewing and rendering (try to do some of these)
>> viewing >> viewing a building model
>> rendering views & creating walkthroughs >> rendering interior/exterior views
>> presentation views >> all of 'em if you can
make sure your formZ model is detailed i would rather this be done well than you half-@55 it and breeze through the tutorials
take your time : be precise : be intent : be sincere : care about your work
then start on the tutorials selected here
get as far as you can and we will work more on them in class

Facade wall . section . bay model
1. complete your formZ model in detailed authority - you show that wall and formz whos boss! model away and clean and detailed - the more you model the more you understand, the more you understand the more you can explore, the more you can explore the more finesse your project will have and the more effort your instructors will see the better your grade can be...
(rhyming hmm?)
NOTE: sketch first in your sketchbook your plan of modeling - it makes everything so much easier
2. REVIT > help > tutorials : do as many as you can but definitely get down to rendering and viewing
3. curriculum video - its on the server arch2354/templates/curriculum install this and watch the video
come to class with a complete model + some screen shots of you working through the tutorials (hit print screen or some method of showing us your processes through the tutorials) they can be jpegs ...
any questions send us an email

Black Plan Phase Alpha Omega I
Go back to the gallery building that you visited and took pictures of for the 2d phase.
Pick a facade of that building and begin taking measurements, these measurements need to be as detailed as you can manage. The ares that you can reach must be detailed while ones you may not reach should be estimated as precisely as possible.
From this information you will begin constructing a 3d model of the building facade. Use the tools taught to you in the past week to create a detailed and intricate model of your building facade.
Because this is a model of just one facade we expect details you would not normally model, details such as brick thickness, flashing type, whether the windows are double or single paned.
The more detail and work you put into these models the better the resulting project will be.
We understand many people have made plans for spring break, we ask those people to go ahead and gather some rough measurements so that they may start on this project and have something for the week of the 19th. You may gather the specific measurements during that week as we will be working on this model during class time.
The week after spring break we expect you to have begun this project so that we may work with you during class.

if you would like to resubmit your work we would prefer if you make corrections to return your pieces ASAP - i suggested 6pm tonite on TUES however i think that might be rushing it too much - if you need extra time - we will be accepting resubmittals until your respective classes - ie: tomorrow we will take work for the monday classes & the same for TR we will accept tuesday work on thursday - the instructors will go over the resubmittals and make a final cut - print on 8.5x11 or 11x17 whichever you need NOT BIG PLOT!!

the intent is to have class at hardtops for wahlberg's - 092 & 094 sections - meet at hardtops WED - we will be organizing the space and setting up for hanging - i will also need some of you on the crew for postcards to take care of that and pass them out once they are created ... i think this will be fun so please show up so we can get everything as ready as possible for friday - again i want to thank everyone for their effort and beautiful work - we were all very appreciative of your efforts!

it's simple, you have a lot of work to choose from. you have photos, research, traces, diagrams, catalogues, names, words and a lot of thoughts, opinions and some really very beautiful ideas that are just beginning to come forth from your work in this class.
all of this is your ammunition, and you may use it at your free will. some of you will choose to be a variable renegade vigilante and others a very precise sniper. what ever method you choose, you must hit the target, so be conscious of how and why you are doing things. remember, there is a second phase to this, so try something new and do not be afraid to mess up. but use caution in the fact that you will have a very short time for round two and the more developed this step ends up, the better off you will be when you compose your final.
here are your tips:
.01_flex your digital muscles.
remember, this is a computer course that is tying several digital programs and interfaces together into one project in hopes that you can find your best methods and strengths within how you work as a creator. we are reaching the end of the 2d phase. what have you learned about photoshop, illustrator, etc. show us just how good you can be. show us that you are expanding your knowledge-base of these programs. hint:: layers may be your best friend in the world on this assignment, but do not ignore your love for opacity, cut and paste, scale, trace and the ever-so-lovely goddess, line weight.
.02_use your silver bullet.
before jumping into this one look through your past work and identify the one thing that best sums up what you have found in your 2d exploration. this is the gem that to which everything else must cohesively relate. this is your brilliant whisper. this is your silver bullet.
.03_speak softly.
do not try and do too much in one collage. just because a lot is available, does not mean you must throw everything into one piece. remember, you are only going to have one final piece, so it had better be well done. simple brevity usually says it best.
.04_communication is the key.
who cares how good you are if you cannot convey what you are trying to do and say? the answer is no one. the reason is that you will not gain the attention long enough to even whisper your sweet 'everythings'. don't just make it pretty, make it pretty convincing. you have a lot here and after you narrow it down to that gem everything goes into explaining that gem and communicating its worth to its fullest extent.
.05_your the captain.
this 'ship' is under your charge and if it sinks it is only you we will blame. however, the work is done well, it's all you and you will get the glory. in this class, an assignment is an assignment, but the project is more important. higher than that even , are the computer programs you need to learn and then lies the student at the top of the pile. we want you to stick to what we ask for as much as possible, but in the end, if you have an alternative idea that you think will work better and you want to take that chance, go for it. not all classes will give you this freedom. here, we care that you keep up, do well, care about what you are doing and get to know these dang programs intimately they will make your good projects great if you learn them well.
and lastly,
.06_there is power in intention.
there's no accidents now. be decisive, make choices, guide your work and learn as you go. you have it within you to explore this process / project and expand your talents and tools in using computers as a strength, not an hindrance. show us that you know what's going on. take control mentally and erase all chances of mistakes and excuses.
good luck. good work. and enjoy this beautiful weekend.

Catalogue
According to the classical view, categories should be clearly defined, mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. This way, any entity of the given classification universe belongs unequivocally to one, and only one, of the proposed categories.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categorization
At the moment the collage exists as an arbitrary overlay of separate diagrams that are each highlighting their own information found in the initial image. To make sense of these objects a catalogue will be used to streamline the thinking process and create a vocabulary of parts with which to work with.
Find objects within your collage that may be separated and distinguished, this includes vector parts, scanned diagram pieces and selections from the initial image
With these separate objects find groups of parts, focus on systems, conditions, urbanism, infrastructure, critique, etc.
Place these objects in the matrix in their defined row and separated into columns. Each row of your matrix should be a category defined by yourself. Each column is a position for a separate part, number, or variant.
Remember economy of means and be selective in your categories, do not place a single 1” vector line as a part if it is in a set of many 1” vector lines. Do not submit forty 1” vector lines as a part. Find a balance

CRITIQUE
“Critique comes from the Greek krinein which means: “to sort”, “to sort out” and thus to “lift out that special sort.” This contrast against others arises from an elevation to a new order. The sense of the word “critique” is so little negative that it means the most positive, the positing of what must be established in advance in all positing as what is determinative and decisive. Therefore, critique is a separation and lifting out of the special, the uncommon and, at the same time, decisive, therefore, and only in consequence, is it also a rejection of the commonplace and unsuitable.

5 vector diagrams with layers containing ::
live paint . pen . shapes . strokes . vector objects
live trace
raster original
1 master diagram with the 5 vector diagrams overlaid ::
the layers can be an order
in the background needs to be original photograph
so basically vectorize 5 hand drawn diagrams with ::
original raster layer
live trace
some type of live paint plus pens, objects etc.
Then overlay them together, locked layers work best, with the original photograph in the background.
Submit a .psd file or .ai file on the server for Wed + Thurs

BLACK PLAN phase I part i
You are looking for as many things as possible to diagram::
What systems exist within your image?
What objects do you want to highlight?
What lines do you want to accentuate?
Are there examples of positive space?
Are there examples of negative space?
Diagram tensions that exist between objects.
Diagram relationships that exist between objects.
Pick up on items that aren't immediately apparent.
Use mix media (graphite, ink, paint, etc.)
Tell a story of this place, help us the viewer understand the image/place through layers of information.
From these 15 find the 5 best, scan those at high res. Then bring the diagrams to class and submit the scans onto the server.
