friday's submittal for nason's classes!!
tomorrow,
friday the 4th at 11:59pm your finished 3d models are due. no animations or line drawings are due until you post your website next friday. for this in your network folder you should add a file entitled "final 3d model" in that put the actual file of your finished model and at least 5 [FIVE] renderings of it. these renderings do not have to be of finished quality, but it should be apparant that you have begun to work on lighting and rendering. they can be small though. they are just proof of what you have done and how you did it.
i am currently working on getting the website up and running and will send another message when it is ready for you to post.
good luck on your finals and please have a safe summer!

these should be scanned in from sketchbooks, or collages etc. > taken into photoshop > illustrator or cad then into max
i expect my classes to experiment with the modifiers and techniques we have learned thus far...
including but not limited to:
splines
> enable in render
> enable in viewport
> radial or rectangular
> sweep modifier
> extrude modifier
modifiers
> bend
> cloth
> taper
> extrude
> displace
edit mesh
> vertex
> segment
> face
> polygons
> element
> slice plane ( select element, create the slice plane, slice and modify shapes)
> soft selection
lights
> light tracer
> sky light
> direct light
> projector map
rendering
> background colors & maps
> small format or large formats
> advanced lighting
> force wireframe
camera
> target
> film sizes
> free cameras
i believe that is the extent of informative concepts we covered i expect you to experiement with these, enhance your current projects, and have a fun playing with the software because i feel that is the best way for you to learn this is just play with it to an applied project
have your files on the server in a folder in the black plan phase alpha omega I in a folder full of your max files for monday
also have some renders so i can look at your work

nason's babies for wednesday
all.
nothing new is due today. have your computer's loaded w/viz or max and ready to go. we will cover some more modeling tips and then do some practicizing in it. however, after today you should have nothing else to do to get caught up on. you should not be behind anylonger. see you at 7.30 or 5.30 [maybe after 5.30 if the lecture goes over].

idea exploration imagination
look into your inspirations, graffiti, west texas, star wars, comics, whatever, lebbeus woods, morphosis, neil denari, your artists, musicians, etc.
create or invent an idea - this idea is to be EXPLORED : EXLPOITED : ENHANCED and have lots of energy (seriously) this idea will be taken into photoshop, CAD or Illustrator, then into 3dsMAx or Viz.
with your idea we will continue to experiment with edit mesh, modifiers of your selection, editable splines, renderable splines, sweeps, soft selections, and anything else you can create or come up with. the INTENT is to create and imagine architectural space so that you can explore the depths of this software.
come to class with your original sketch, collage, and idea - well formulated and well documented (scanned in and traced ready for max)
we will cover advanced lighting and default scan line render
we will cover mental ray render, global illumination, ambient occlusion
we will cover simple auto-key animation
next week is the last week of class come to class ready to learn and take notes we will go over a lot of information again :

Revit Assignment
This weekend you will create your gallery space using Revit. If you have the Underwood Center you may exchange buildings for one of the smaller galleries. Focus on walls, inserted curtain walls, anything that is visible. For the interior structure use your current knowledge of structure and common sense to design a simple system. If you do not know how to create a certain element then consult the tutorials in Revit. Remember you are not just modeling the facade you are modeling the entire gallery space from front to back. Think of the big picture while you model.
This assignment will be due this next Wednesday/Thursday on the 11th/12th.
Also :: for the weekend grab the Viz 2007 installer at \\archlab\viz2007
work with this program so that you are familiar with it for next week
NO CLASS ON MONDAY THE 9th AND TUESDAY THE 10TH
Tuesday, April 3, 2007
nason's wed.
we will only meet for one hour on wednesday evening. the first class will meet from 5.30-6.30 and the later class will meet from 8.30 to 9.30. you are welcome to come to either one.

Nason's Classes for Wed. April 4th!
okay nason's classes. it's time to get back on track. there's a lot of work due wednesday, so make sure you get it done. there will be no extension issued for these two parts, and no excuses for not having it done and done well. if you don't know how to do something, find out. ignorance is not acceptable with the resources you obtain.
p_01. building tutorial must be 100% complete and done well. do something different to show
you did it and learned from it. five jpegs of the building in process and one at least 2 of
the final product must be in your class-network folder before the start of class on
wednesday.
p_02. build a rev-it model of your entire gallery. do it well and do it as detailed as possible. put
at least 3 jpegs of your final product in your class-network folder before the start of
wednesday's class. mediocrity is not an option here. if you are caught up on the tutorial,
this will not be a bad work load. if you failed to complete the week-long assignment that
was due today, you are in for some long nights, and you will get no sympathy from me. if
your gallery is the underwood center, do not model the entire thing. you can either model
a section of it comparable to the other galleries, join with other underwoodians and share
sections to compile a complete model or you can pick one of the smaller galleries and
model it out in explicit detail.
check your email for more details. i sent out a mass email to both sections describing the assignment in a little more detail. good luck and do a good job. i need to see some proof of effort on these. i am rather disappointed by the majority of the buildings and modelings i have seen as of late.

REVIT TUTORIALS UPDATE
hey all,
upon further inspection of the tutorials there is quite a bit of tutorials! and there are some that do not relate to our modeling skills - i have whittled the selection of tutorials down to the following
getting started (intro explains the program and GUI) >> understanding the basics
developing your ideas (this one pretty much sums up the modeling) >> creating a building information model
viewing and rendering (try to do some of these)
>> viewing >> viewing a building model
>> rendering views & creating walkthroughs >> rendering interior/exterior views
>> presentation views >> all of 'em if you can
make sure your formZ model is detailed i would rather this be done well than you half-@55 it and breeze through the tutorials
take your time : be precise : be intent : be sincere : care about your work
then start on the tutorials selected here
get as far as you can and we will work more on them in class

Facade wall . section . bay model
ALL STUDENTS
1. complete your formZ model in detailed authority - you show that wall and formz whos boss! model away and clean and detailed - the more you model the more you understand, the more you understand the more you can explore, the more you can explore the more finesse your project will have and the more effort your instructors will see the better your grade can be...
(rhyming hmm?)
NOTE: sketch first in your sketchbook your plan of modeling - it makes everything so much easier
2. REVIT > help > tutorials : do as many as you can but definitely get down to rendering and viewing
3. curriculum video - its on the server arch2354/templates/curriculum install this and watch the video
come to class with a complete model + some screen shots of you working through the tutorials (hit print screen or some method of showing us your processes through the tutorials) they can be jpegs ...
any questions send us an email
